Tucson Author Larry Dane Brimmer talks about his book, "Black & White", which conducts a firsthand glimpse of a civil rights pioneer. Larry collected this data from interviews with Reverend Fred L. Shuttlesworth, whom was a elder statesman of the civil rights movement and a friend of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
Larry Dane Brimner has written more than 150 books aimed at young readers, both fiction and non-fiction, drawing on 20 years of classroom teaching as an experience in how to connect with his audience.
Growing up in a family whose roots were in Birmingham, Alabama helped make Brimner interested in writing about racial prejudice and the explosive events that occurred in the South during the civil rights era.
His latest work is Black & White: The Confrontation Between Reverend Fred L. Shuttlesworth and Eugene "Bull" Connor, for readers 12 and up. It has been recognized with the Robert F. Sibert award for outstanding non-fiction.
Shuttlesworth was considered one of the elder statesmen of the civil rights movement and was both a friend and colleague of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Before Rev. Shuttlesworth died in 2011, he granted extensive interviews to Brimner, and that first-hand information forms the basis for the book.
