The Tucson Cactus and Succulent Society is developing prickly Park for rescued cacti and other succulents.
Dick Wiedhopf, president of the Tucson Cactus and Succulent Society, says his organization has rescued more than 57,000 cacti and succulent plants since its inception in 1999.
Now, with the signing of a 15-year agreement with Pima County, the society has begun landscaping and transplanting a diverse array of plants at the newly established Pima Prickly Park.
Wiedhopf says TCSS harvests specimens that would otherwise be destroyed by construction projects, and it’s great to have a place where the public can enjoy the plants.
George Cook, operations manager for Pima County Natural Resources Parks and Recreation Division, says the goal is to make the 9.4-acre site near West River Road and North Camino de la Tierra more inviting for visitors.
Wiedhopf says Prickly Park is open but he points out it is still in it’s infancy. Members of the Tucson Cactus and Succulent Society will spend the year landscaping and transplanting specimens in preparation for the grand opening in the fall of 2012.
