Don Falk, an associate professor in the University of Arizona's School of Natural Resources and the Environment, has for decades focused his research on the fire history, fire ecology and restoration ecology of the Southwest.

The Wallow fire, which has become the state's largest in history, is only one of several blazes that firefighters and others are trying to battle throughout the state. While usually described with words like "devastating" or "horrific" by members of the media and the public, Falk says extensive fires in the West have been part of the natural landscape for ages and play a vital role in those areas.
