For almost 30 years, Casa Maria has filled a need to feed the disenfranchised and the hungry.
Since 1981, Casa Maria has helped feed the hungry in Tucson.
Brian Flagg runs the soup kitchen, located just outside South Tucson city limits, and he says the numbers seeking help have increased steadily since he joined the volunteer-run organization in 1983.
“It’s like feeding time at the zoo… there’s so many people,” Flagg says. “It’s about survival.”
Volunteers at Casa Maria distribute around 500 bagged lunches and up to 150 bags of groceries for families each day.
Flagg says the work at Casa Maria is only a small part of what ultimately needs to be done to alleviate hunger in this community, and it’s wrong that people have to “beg to feed their families.”
“I’m angry,” he says. “But that anger fuels struggle and we’re going to overcome one day. Ultimately, good is going to win over evil and I have faith in that.”
