Your daily food and the way you live

June 2, 2010

Have you ever heard of anyone composting a futon mattress? Kim Fox recently did it!

Kim Fox is a micro-urban farmer who grows much of her own food in her small city backyard by planting vegetables, raising chickens and composting many materials, including old telephone books and that futon mattress. She has been holding educational workshops about local food production and sustainable living practices for years. She is also a big fan of vermiculture, the practice of keeping earthworms in specialized containers to help break down vegetative matter which can then be used in your garden.

Fox is taking off on a trip to Europe, where she hopes to travel from Paris to Lithuania on a "food trek" so she can learn more about issues like traditional farming practices, farmers' markets and sustainable agriculture.

She wants to come back to Arizona where she can disseminate her knowledge.
