Story by Christopher Conover
After nearly two weeks of work, the House and Senate wrapped up the special session on the budget. In all lawmakers sent five out of six proposed bills to the Governor. Each of the bills was designed to reduce the current $1.5 billion budget deficit. The proposal initially receiving the most attention was Special Session Senate Concurrent Resolution 1001 which puts Governor Jan Brewer’s temporary sales tax increase on the ballot for a May 18th special election. The special session seemed as though it stalled when the House took up Special Session Senate Bill 1002. Tucson state Representative Frank Antenori added an amendment to the bill tying the implementation of the proposal with a jobs and tax bill. Senate President Bob Burns had said he would not take up the jobs bill until after the budget work was completed. One day after the House passed the amended SB 1002, both chambers agreed to end the special session without the final passage of Special Session SB 1002.

Special Session Senate Bill 1001
