Since the early 1990s Indian gaming has brought millions of dollars to tribes in AZ, dollars they have invested in a host of projects from health care to education to begin to improve quality of life for tribal members. The compact the tribe signed with the state expires in 2013, and though it may be renewed there is no certainty of that occurring. Tohono O'odham officials recognize that they need to diversify their economic base and have taken steps to do just that.
